Adrain's Story
On 11 April 2027, Adrian Kevern will set out on the challenge of a lifetime. He will travel to Nepal to trek to Everest Base Camp, reaching an altitude of 5,364 metres above sea level, to raise vital funds for Hospice at Home West Cumbria in memory of his beloved wife, Tracey.
Adrian lost Tracey to multiple myeloma on Good Friday 2025. During her illness, both Adrian and Tracey received support from Hospice at Home West Cumbria through its holistic services.
The support they received had a lasting impact on Adrian. “Their support for Tracey was a great comfort to us and the group sessions I participated in have been a huge help. I feel greatly honoured to be doing this in memory of Tracey to support future care for individuals and families in West Cumbria.”
Following Tracey's death, he found himself looking for a new purpose and a way to rediscover himself. “It was more of a spiritual awakening and realisation that I had to find a purpose and rediscover meaning in my life,” Adrian explains. That search for purpose eventually led him towards Everest, following a conversation with his friend Christine, who told him about the Hospice trek.
For Adrian, the trek represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a completely different part of the world. “Getting the chance to immerse myself and experience life with the Sherpa community and people of the Nepal region is something I am really looking forward to.”
Taking on Everest Base Camp requires serious preparation, and Adrian has already begun building his fitness and endurance. He regularly gets out walking locally, both on his own and with close friends. He also has a monthly walk with friend Christine, who will be joining him on the Hospice Everest trek, as well as his niece and nephew, who are taking on their own Base Camp trek in October. Adrian is also working with a physiotherapist, checking in monthly to manage any minor muscular issues and make sure he is physically prepared.
The fundraising target for the trek is £2,500 with Adrian increasing his target to £5,000 and rather than relying solely on donations, Adrian has been organising various fundraising activities, such as a World Cup Sweepstake, and Tracey’s colleagues are hosting a coffee and cake afternoon in her memory which will all go towards Adrian’s fundraising target.
For Adrian, supporting local hospice care is incredibly important. “Local Hospice Care needs the funding and support of the local community to enable them to have as greater impact as possible for those in need. Knowing that each donation has a positive impact locally is so important as the Charity receives limited funding towards there services.”
