Four Whitehaven youngsters have raised over £2,000 for a local charity that provided end of life care to one of their parents.
The group organised a Christmas Fayre at Red Lonning Community Centre in Whitehaven during December to raise money for local palliative care charity, Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
Fundraising activities included a raffle, colour lucky dip, the sale of refreshments and lunch bags, Christmas crafts, reindeer food making sessions, a bouncy castle, outdoor treasure hunt, a cake stall, decoration making and a tombola.
The group nicknamed ‘The Awesome Foursome’ by family members supporting them included Lucy Hayes (aged 10), Poppy George (aged 10), Romy Fearon (aged 10) and Ella Davidson (aged 9) – not forgetting special assistant Rhys Hayes (aged 6), Lucy’s brother!
Lucy and Rhys said, “We can’t believe that we raised over £2000 and lots of people came and made amazing donations. There was even a visit from Mrs Claus and a unicorn which made it even more special. We wanted to raise money because our daddy died last year and the team at Hospice at Home West Cumbria took great care of him. They’ve also been helping us as a family too and we just wanted to do something to say thank you.”
Keith Hayes aged 41 from Whitehaven sadly passed away last year after a cancer diagnosis. He received palliative care from the Hospice at Home West Cumbria nursing team and the family have received support from the FABS (Family & Bereavement) Unit.
Lucy and Rhys’s mum Clare Hayes said, “I am so proud of what Lucy and her friends have achieved. They have worked so hard to raise money for a charity that means to such a lot to us a family. Thanks to everyone who came along and supported them so generously, allowing them to hand over such a fantastic sum of money. We know that the team at Hospice at Home will put the money to good use as we have experienced first-hand, what a difference their care can make to families who are going through such difficult times.”
