A group of students from Workington Academy have raised a fantastic total of £881.34 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria by taking part in the ‘Grow your £30 challenge’ where each group was given £30.00 and tasked with turning it into as much as possible to support the charity’s vital work providing palliative and end of life care across West Cumbria.

The students created two teams to take on the challenge. In “Team 1”, there was Brooke, Hannah and Nieve who held a ‘decorate your Easter Egg’ competition, a staff ‘coffee and cake day’, and a ‘raffle’ involving friends, family and staff. Their efforts raised an amazing total of £635.31. In “Team 2” Sofia, Lucy, and Grace sold over 1,000 ice pops at 20p each, bringing in an impressive £246.03.

Jessica Woolaghan, Partnerships and Fundraising Co-ordinator at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, recently visited the students at Workington Academy to celebrate and thank them for their incredible fundraising achievement. During her visit, Jessica spoke to the students about the services provided by Hospice at Home West Cumbria. She highlighted how the charity delivers compassionate care to individuals and families during some of the most difficult times in their lives, and how fundraising plays a key role in enabling this work to continue. She also explained how their donation would help local families going through a difficult time.

Jessica Woolaghan, Partnerships and Fundraising Co-ordinator said: “It was inspiring to see how the students at Workington Academy embraced this challenge with such creativity and commitment. They embraced the challenge and came up with some brilliant ideas, all while sourcing their own materials, and promoting them to maximise their income. Their efforts will make a real difference to local families in need of care from Hospice at Home West Cumbria, and we're incredibly grateful to all the students involved.”

Miss Jackson, Business Studies teacher at Workington Academy, shared: “We are incredibly proud of our students and how hard they worked during the challenge. They demonstrated excellent project management skills, including budgeting, marketing, and teamwork.”

The money raised from the students could fund approximately 35 hours of compassionate home nursing care for families in the local community.

One of the students involved commented: ‘’This challenge has helped me develop new entrepreneurial skills throughout my fundraising tasks. I have thoroughly enjoyed raising money for such an amazing cause, and I’m extremely proud that our donations will be used to support this great charity.’’
