From the 20th to 27th of March we are proud to support National Complementary Therapy Week.

Complementary Therapists quickly get used to initial scepticism or dismissal of their practices as ‘Woo-Woo’ or quackery. Fear not. We are A) used to it, and B) can site research, theory and reams of positive patient feedback to dismiss the most ardent of critics.

A fine selection of supportive arguments and international research findings are brought together in David R. Hamilton’s recent offering, “Why Woo-Woo works: The surprising science behind meditation, reiki, crystals and other alternative practices”.

As David Hamilton summarises: “The ideas behind some of these holistic therapies have been around for millennia. Now it’s time to embrace the scientific truth behind their incredible healing power.”

Reiki is one of the most sought treatments from the Hospice at Home West Cumbria team and studies that illustrate its effectiveness are cited in the book. Research into reiki for cancer patients covers pain, nausea, depression, fatigue, side effects of treatment, anxiety and overall well-being. Significant improvements are cited from various international studies across a range of situations.

As a new introduction to services at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, our Complementary Therapy team are leased to see Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) tapping mentioned in David Hamilton’s book. David notes how MRI scans are being used to demonstrate neurological effects of EFT sessions through cutting edge research with PTSD sufferers.

Despite its controversial title, the book is a welcome addition to the now many voices championing such approaches and calling for them to receive the recognition they deserve.  Although HHWC don’t offer all of the approaches mentioned in the title, the book gives weight to the impact we witness day to day.
