To celebrate National Complementary Therapy Week, we would like to introduce Beth Hotson, a Complementary Therapy volunteer who was drawn to Hospice at Home West Cumbria after a family member received support from our Complementary Therapy team.

Below, Beth shares her passion for health and well-being, and her journey working in Complementary Therapies.

“I was born in West Cumbria and left home just before my 18th birthday to live in Sheffield, where I worked in hospitality. I loved this work as I got to meet a diverse group of people and always enjoyed listening to their life stories.

In my early 20’s I began voluntary work with young vulnerable people.  This was the beginning of my journey towards working in complementary therapies.  Supporting people to become the best version of themselves, assisting them in healing and overcoming trauma sparked passion within me.

In 2009 I moved to Queensland, Australia.  Eager to continue along this path I took on a role as a volunteer in family support.  This mainly consisted of working with women and children who were escaping abusive relationships. Again, this gave me a lot of joy seeing the families find peace within their lives.

During this time I was introduced to various complementary therapies and began to meditate regularly, attending regular yoga classes and retreats, which I found helpful for my own personal development.

After starting a family, I moved back to the UK and began my training in holistic therapies. This included Aromatherapy, various massage techniques, and Reflexology, although, it was my introduction to Reiki which really changed things for me.

I have always felt energy running through me but never realised what it was until I was introduced to Reiki; this was a ‘light switch moment” for me as it explained the feelings I had previously struggled with.

I continue to attend courses, retreats and spiritual events whenever possible to expand my personal and professional growth.

I am passionate about health and well-being and use energy work as a catalyst to the healing process.  My approach is to enable my clients to bring balance to both their physical and emotional sides and access their inherent ability to heal themselves.

In 2015 both my father and stepfather were diagnosed with cancer, within months of each other.  Devastated, I struggled to witness the affect this had, not only for them but my whole family. I found out about Hospice at Home West Cumbria after my stepfather received Reiki treatments to help with the pain and discomfort. I continued to see signs and felt drawn towards looking into this work myself.  I believe the universe is always sending us messages to guide us to our true path. I then became a volunteer at the hospice and truly feel I have found my light.

Complementary therapies have helped me massively throughout my life, so I now enjoy supporting others, to allow them to find their light.

Thank you for reading.

Namaste”

Beth
