Gary McKee from Cleator Moor has taken on the monumental challenge of completing 110 marathons in 110 days to support Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Gary started his challenge on 1st February and is now on day 79, running the same 26.2-mile route every morning, with his final marathon set to be completed on 21st May.

There has been an incredible amount of support from Gary’s family and friends, people in local communities and celebrities from all over the UK, including a personal video message from multiple Olympic, World and European Champion long distance runner, Sir Mo Farah!

Other members of the family are also involved including all three of Gary’s children, Alfie, Beau and Minnie completing their own daily running and cycling challenges, and Gary’s nephew Stuart and 16-year-old Alfie, are following in Gary’s footsteps and completing a marathon every day!

We would like to spread the word and pay tribute to the “Marvellous McKee’s”!

Stuart, 43, lives in Whitehaven with his wife Vivienne and their two daughters Sophie, 13, and Libby, 11. To support Gary in his 110 challenge, Stuart and Alfie have been completing their own marathons and cycling 26.2 miles every day. Here Stuart tells us more:

“I decided to join the 110 day challenge after finding out that my cousin Alfie was going to be doing a marathon every day on his exercise bike. I think it’s great that Alfie is doing this to support his Dad, for a young lad to commit to something as big and time consuming as this challenge is great, so I said I’d do it alongside him for some support.

I knew it would be hard to do as biking is very different to running, and I only started cycling myself at the back end of 2020, after two ankle operations meant I was no longer able to run. We don’t do the rides together, as Alfie does his from home on his exercise bike to fit in around school and sports etc. I do a mix of using my indoor turbo machine or out on the roads, and most weekends I’ll do one ride with my brother- in-law Chris McKee, who’s been a great support throughout.

We have our own fundraising page to raise money for Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support, our original target was to raise £500 – and we have currently raised £1580, which is fantastic! I’d like to thank everyone who has sponsored me and Alfie so far, and I’d also like to thank my wife Viv for doing everything around the home for the past 78 days and for the remainder of the challenge to enable me to spend my time getting the miles in!

We have another 32 days to go, which is around another 850 miles each. Please keep supporting us and help us to raise as much as we can for these two very worthy charities.”
