We are absolutely overwhelmed to receive a donation to our Emergency Appeal of £30,000 from the Mahone family in memory of their loved one Joanne Mahone.  Joanne’s family, friends, colleagues and local community committed themselves to raising money to try and get treatment for Joanne, but after a short fight, and support from our Hospice at Home West Cumbria nurses, Joanne passed away.

Joanne’s husband Martin said “Last year, my darling wife Joanne passed away after a short fight against a very aggressive Sarcoma cancer. Jo was in extreme pain for the four months since she was diagnosed with this evil disease. The Hospice at Home nurses, and in particular nurse Nora, were so helpful and caring in Jo’s final days with us. The marvellous community we live in committed to fundraising to try and get treatment to save Jo. Unfortunately, this was impossible.  I saw your plight and plea on your Facebook page recently and spoke to the fund trustees. They were in total agreement to donate some of the funding to such a fantastic local organisation like Hospice at Home West Cumbria”.

Martin and his community also lost two other people in 2019 and want to dedicate the donation not only in memory of Joanne, but also to Carly McCarron from Frizington, and Cheryl Clark from Cleator Moor.  Martin continued “Our community also lost two other young women to cancer in 2019, Carly and Cheryl. Our families have become really close and I want the donation to also be in their honour.  The way the community came together to fundraise was amazing and I want them to see where their contributions are going and thank them for their support”.

From all at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, thank you so much for this amazing donation.  It will make a huge difference to ensuring other families can get the support from our wonderful nurses during their most difficult times.
