Iain Nicholson has been a valued supporter of Hospice at Home West Cumbria for many years now and has not only fund raised for our charity, but has also given up his time and volunteered at many of our events, along with his wife Christina who has worked for hospice in our Home Nursing and Lymphoedema teams for 14 years.

Iain was set to support us again this year by taking part in the Great North Run, but since this has unfortunately been cancelled, Iain decided to sign up to our 50 Faces for Hospice challenge instead.

Here Iain tells us what he plans to do:

As it became apparent that the Great North Run (GNR) was going to be cancelled myself and Christina were thinking of ideas around how I could still raise funds for hospice, as I know how much they need the funding after most of this years events have had to be cancelled.

I’ve been a keen runner for 4 and half years now and so I wanted to base my ideas around my passion. We were thinking of a challenging run and Millom to Maryport was mentioned – as this is the area that is covered by Hospice at Home West Cumbria, and it planted a seed in my head!

So, on Saturday 5th December this year, I plan to run over 60 miles starting at Millom and finishing in Maryport.  If all goes well on the day, the plan is to complete the distance in sub 12 hours.

As I have already been training for the GNR, I’ll be increasing my runs, and as time goes on I’ll end up doing 5/6 per week and gradually increase to 60-80 miles per week. I will also incorporate other types of training that will help with recovery.

Over the coming weeks and months I’ll be doing plenty of recce runs along the route as I will be planning several stops for nutrition and hydration on the day of the run,  these are going to be approximately 10 miles apart.

I’ve already had a few friends and family offer their time and support to be part of the service crew on the day, which is very much appreciated.  If any other people with skills that would help me (physio, nutrition etc.) would like to be involved, I’d be really grateful for their help and expertise!

I have a fundraising target of £500 for the #50FACES challenge, and would be so grateful for any sponsors towards this. You can visit my fundraising page to make a donation and keep up to date with my plans and training. Roll on December!
