Alison Jolly and her son John from Workington were getting fed up of their hair do’s during lockdown and decided to do something about it.

Before

Alison had already been thinking about raising money for a local charity and decided to do a sponsored head shave to support Hospice at Home West Cumbria after realising we would be unable to hold some of our main fundraising events at this time.

Alison said, “I decided to support Hospice at Home West Cumbria as they are a local charity that do a lot of good work in our home town. We decided to do a sponsored head shave as we were unhappy with our hair and obviously are unable to go to the hairdressers at the moment! We wanted to do it for a purpose. John was a bit hesitant at first but soon came round to the idea.”

For the day of the head shave, Alison enlisted the help of her brother Stu and nephew Ryan.

Alison went first, with Ryan and Stu taking it in turns to shave her hair off and there was a lot of laughter involved!

Alison said, “I was absolutely shocked when I looked in the mirror once it was done but couldn’t stop laughing! I just kept thinking about all of the lovely people who had given donations to our Just Giving page”

Stu then started on John’s thick head of hair. Unfortunately, only a quarter of the way through, the clippers broke!

Alison said “I threw my cardigan on and a cap and with adrenalin pumping through me, Stu took me to Asda where I had to stand in the long queue of people with baskets and trollies. I raced in, grabbed the replacement clippers and dashed to the till. When I got there, I pulled my cardigan open to reveal my Hospice at Home t-shirt, pulled my cap off and told the lady on the till I was in the middle of sponsored head shave. She said well done! John suffers from autism and sensory issues and was quite anxious until I got back home but told Stu carry on!”

After

The donations continued to roll in on Just Giving and Alison and John were gobsmacked when they realised they had raised £350 on their page.

Alison said “When we checked the total we were really shocked. We can’t thank everyone who supported us enough. We’re so glad that we did it”

We would like to say a massive thank you to Alison and John for their fundraising and of course their support team Stu and Ryan. We hope their heads haven’t been too cold!
